Judges praise Denstone’s fabulous bacon as they declare Denstone Hall Farm Shop left rivals sizzling in their wake after their home-cured bacon was declared the very best in the country. The butchers at Denstone Hall are the toast of Bacon Connoisseurs Week after their Old Spot beer and mustard with Staffordshire honey middle bacon was crowned the champion at a national awards ceremony on Monday 19th March 2012, beating off competition from some of the biggest names in the business. The competition was held by the British Pork Executive (BPEX), a national body which promotes quality pork through its Love Pork website, and this year the organisation launched its Red, White and Bacon campaign to celebrate Britain’s love of bacon. Denstone Hall Farm Shop and Café in Main Road, Denstone, created the bacon by taking a middle of from a Gloucester Old Spot pig, dry curing it traditionally over two week before marinating it for a further 10 days in a beer mustard and Staffordshire honey mixture. Their efforts saw the bacon declared a finalist in the Red, White and Bacon awards’ “Rasher-nal” Treasure category – for bacon that best represents our heritage – earlier in the year, before it was subject to a blind taste-test by a panel of expert judges. The winner was announced at Monday’s ceremony, which was held at London’s Simpsons in the Strand where Rupert received the prize from former newsreader Angela Rippon. Denstone’s bacon was also put on the menu at the capital’s legendary Simpson’s-in-The-Strand restaurant, which celebrates British produce and was once the haunt of guests including Charles Dickens, Vincent Van Gogh and George Bernard Shaw. Rupert Evans, owner of Denstone Hall Farm Shop, also attended the ceremony and said that although the bacon was a real result of teamwork. He said: “We are all extremely proud. Although it’s a sweet-cured bacon, the beer mustard gives it a slightly bitter undertone, which counteracts the honey nicely. "It was a real honour to attend the ceremony and a tremendous feeling when we won. We also had a nice chat with Angela Rippon, who was really interested in what we are doing at Denstone.” Denstone has won a number of awards for its bacon in the past, including a Gold Award for its smoked and unsmoked products at BPEX’s Bacon Connoisseurs Week Awards last year. In December it picked up a Gold award at the Winter Fair at the Stafford Show ground for its unsmoked bacon.

Rupert said "having won a Gold at the Winter Fair at the Stafford Show ground in December with our unsmoked bacon we were hopeful that we might do well. When I realised we'd won a Gold for both the smoked and unsmoked I was incredibly pleased".
